"Right…. But I don't want to come along with you if I'm not going to get any credit or respect out of it! I'm just as much a part of this as you or any of the other animals here", I growled. The other animals began to chant cheers and agreements with me, which, in turn, made me feel very satisfied.
"Shut up, shut up", Rayne screeched to all of the other animals in the aisle. "Shut up, all of you!" Nobody silenced their debate.
Suddenly, two white coats rushed onto the scene and began shouting furiously at all of us to be quiet, curse words coursed all throughout their speech. Unacceptable!
We all grew quiet, except for Rayne of course. Leave it to her to be the last one yelling.
"I will not accept this behavior from any one of you! I am to be respected, as well as my words! Keep this up and all of you will be left here and I will be the only one to have escaped from this prison! I will escape from this anguish! This misery, this torture, this torment, agony, this, this, nightmare! And all of you will be left here in the human's given Anguish for the animal kingdom!" The white coats continued to shout at her, but she was totally drowning their voices out from herself with her complaints. She hadn't even realized that there were any white coats at all paying attention to her.
One rather obese white coat huffed towards her cage in a sort of running and waddling motion. He wrecked open her cage door and choked her by her neck. Rayne began to flap her wings and cough in an annoying sound somewhere between screeching and pleading for help.
The animals began to act up again. Let her go! Fight for your life! Use your beak! Grip his neck in your talons! Everyone was suggesting things for her to do, but she was growing weak, anyone could tell. Her wings began to drop and her eyes were growing thin.
I was throwing my paws through the cage's bars shouting the only word I could think of. No!
No? Is that seriously the only word I could come up with?! How was no supposed to make that baldy fight back?!
Suddenly, Rayne's eyes busted wide open and her pupils grew small surrounded in a pool of yellow. She screeched more annoying than usual, like the sound an emperor penguin made, and she pecked at the white coat's wrist, her neck turned slightly too far for a normal baldy. She turned uncomfortably around to face the white coat's front and she hugged his neck into her talons, the golden claws puncturing through his skin to the point where blood began to sneak out.
"Dr. Roundabouté!" The other white coat ran over towards the obese one, who had just released his hold from Rayne. The eagle weakly flew mid-flight after my cage, and propped open the door with her talons like she'd been doing it for years.
"Come on", she coughed, as I slipped out to freedom. The other animals were silent and were watching us like this was some sort of show of entertainment. Rayne was already heading away towards a large door with the yellow letters 'N.U.M.B. Research Experiment Laboratory' written across. ('N.U.M.B' was above the 'Research Experiment Laboratory' part.)
I stared over at the two white coats when suddenly the other two tripped into view without the Siamese cat in their perimeter. (I suppose there were four of them.) My eyes grew wide and my mouth dropped open.
"Come on!" Rayne's voice was stronger the second time she repeated the words. I flicked my head after her as the doors began to separate to an opening. The baldy was beside a large lever in which was pulled upwards with her sitting on the gripper. I looked back to the white coats.
"Hurry up, wolf! Get out of here while you still can", a porcupine squealed to me from across the aisle.
"Go, number one! They're getting closer!" The Border collie's words were right. The white coats were up on their feet, other than Dr. Roundabouté who was gasping for air on the cold, tile floor. They began to step after me.
"Numb nut, get over here! Before I pick you up by your own ears, get over here!" Rayne's voice seemed to echo through the lab. I obeyed her and turned to her direction. My paws slipped on the floor as I started to run, the voices of the others cheering me on. I felt like I was the center of attention. I felt like everyone wanted to see me free. I felt like they knew I was going to do something to rearrange these works.
But most of all, I felt like I was home again. And from deep inside my stomach, as the door came to a close behind Rayne and me, I felt like I was meant to return to this Anguish, as Rayne would call it, and I felt like I was birthed to end this work of the heartless undead.
another preview of numb, this is literally taken right out of chapter 3, as a matter of fact, its most of chapter 3, hope you like!
